Some selected non-current comments on current events:
"No country that permits firearms to be widely and randomly distributed among its population – especially firearms that are capable of wounding and killing human beings – can expect to escape violence, and a great deal of violence." — Margaret Mead, Redbook (1972)
"I believe that one's basic financial attitudes are – like a tendency toward fat knees – probably formed in utero, or, at the very least, in cribbo. — Peg Bracken, I Didn't Come Here To Argue (1969)
"A celebrity is one who works all his life to become well-known and then goes through back streets wearing dark glasses so he won't be recognized. – Jane Powell (1992)
"Serious sport has nothing to do with fair play. It is bound up with hatred, jealousy. Boastfulness, disregard of all rules and sadistic pleasure in witnessing violence; in other words it is war minus the shooting. — George Orwell, Shooting An Elephant (1950).
"Spring glides gradually into the farmer's consciousness, but on us city people it bursts with all the relish of a sudden surprise, compensating for much of what we lose." — Mrs. William Starr Dana, According to Season (1894)
First, I want to say "thank you" to the many artists and other visitors who have been here, left thoughtful comments, engaged with me on topics of interest, and contributed to conversations that especially to me are what make being here at dA valuable.
Second, I want to let everyone known that #fetishvsbullying is now under guidance of a new site manager, and those of you inclined to visit there (as I hope you will) will notice page reorg, new graphics, a heightened focus on the group's mission, and a (thankfully) much more restrictive image posting policy. I've got an essay or two posted there, as well.
My gallery at BandMachArt is about to reach the 1000 pageview threshold, which for most of you may seem like "so what?" but for me is a nice point to reach. I've been back there uploading new images and stories, too, so little by little the gallery reflects my active artistic side. Feel free to visit there, too, but again be forewarned: while my writing is (I'd like to think) fairly professional, my drawings are merely (I am forced to conclude) merely those of a rank amateur; and, too, that gallery is a rather transgressive one, and thus not for everyone.
The winter wasn't any too good to me: a short but stark list of physical maladies that kept me rather inactive at just the times when finding a way to be active keeps on from winter depressions. I've been working through these setbacks (comes from getting older, for sure), and now that spring has begun to insist on being present, perhaps my body will become ashamed of itself and launch into an aggressive recovery.
Here are the dA galleries I encountered for the first time, over the last two months. Check 'em out, and enjoy 'em:

A Short End-Of-Year Message
People here at dA who know me also know that one of my major failings is wordiness. So I'm going to keep this short (spare me the guffaws...). I wish I was a confirmed optimist. I'm not. I'm a cynic. I'm told that's worse than being a pessimist. So while I work hard to bring pleasure to my family, friends, and those I feel close to in one way or another, in general my perspective is that life on earth is fast going to hell in a hand-basket. Sure, I march in the streets when I can, I send letters that at best get form-letters in reply. We support our causes as best we can. But the clouds continue to gather, don't they? And we still seem to be looking for ways to kill each other. Alas.... And yet, for those of you in dA-Land I have had personal contact with one way or another, once again I muster the courage to let you know that I wish you a new year of Peace, Joy, and Good Health. May your friendships expand and your financial circumstances improve. And for all those of you dA-ers
In Memoriam: Phyllis Coates, 2023
In Memoriam: Phyllis Coates, 2023 (The above studio cheesecake image dates from 1949.) (The above studio cheesecake image dates from 1952.) Phyllis Coates (b. Gypsie Ann Stell in 1927), who starred as the earliest Lois Lane in the TV series, The Adventures of Superman, from 1952-1953, and also as Lois in a few earlier serials, passed away on October 11 at the age of 96. (The above still is taken from Adventures of Superman, Season 1 (1952), Episode 4, “Mystery of the Broken Statues.”) In my imagination, I see Phyllis making her way to Superman’s “Fortress of Solitude,” where she rejoins her co-star George Reeves (“Superman”; d. 1959), as well as Christopher Reeve (“Superman”; 1995), Marlon Brando (“Jor-El”; d. 2004), Margot Kidder (“Lois Lane”; d.2018), and the many other actors who helped bring Superman to the big and small screens since Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster first invented him in the 1930s. We will miss you, Phyllis. Thank you for everything. This post failed to
Tickling and Sexual Arousal - Myth or Reality?
I confess my relative ignorance about any serious physiological or even psycho-physiological research into the relationship between mild tickling, serious tickling ("tickle torture") and tickling with bondage. Therefore, I am forced to take with more than one grain of salt the assertion by some (and the assumption made by many artists exploring this theme) that tickling produces endorphins that get easily transferred to sexual arousal. Is this really true, or just a myth? If it actually occurs for some people, but not all people, then what's the percentage in each category, and how do we know? What's the evidence? How is it demonstrated empirically? I do understand that for some people (both ticklers and ticklees), Knismophilia (tickling fetish) is a powerful interpersonal reality and prelude to sexual activity and thus orgasm. But there doesn't seem to be any reliable physiological research on this topic, especially as it relates to fetishes per se and to the variability of fetishes
So tired of searching. Which pulp mag is it from?
